Nash Farm Battlefield Dedication Draws Thousands

Henry County held a packed schedule of fun and festivities at Nash Farm Battlefield as part of a celebration dedicating the new park, which was held on the 142nd anniversary of Kilpatrick’s Raid. Thousands came from all over the southeast to participate in the event, which was an extraordinary opportunity to learn about both Henry County’s rich Civil War history as well as the culture and lifestyles during the 1860’s.

Civil War reenactors participated in a skirmish, as well as cavalry, infantry and artillery demonstrations. In between these sessions, visitors could stroll through the suttlers area where they could witness a “living history” exhibit where people, dressed in period attire, were demonstrating life during the mid-1800’s – cooking over an open fire, quilting, playing period games, etc. There were also plenty of food and craft vendors, as well as a display of Georgia historical artifacts.

But the crème de la crème was the Cotillion Ball held Saturday evening. Onlookers got a glimpse of yesteryear as they watched dozens of couples, decked in beautiful gowns and coat and tails, dance the night away under the stars to the lovely tunes of the band Unreconstructed. As the night wore on, visitors young and old joined the fun and there was much laughter as they attempted to learn the steps to such dances at the Virginia Reel and the Patty-Cake Polka.

At the Dedication Ceremony on Sunday, Commissioner Elizabeth ‘B.J.’ Mathis choked back emotion as she explained her zeal for preserving this battlefield. “This has been my passion for the last year and a half, since I first set foot on the battlefield and learned its rich history,” said Mathis. “I am grateful to the Board of Commissioners for sharing the vision and preserving this land for future generations.”
