McCook/Stoneman
Raid, July 27-30 1864
This
U.S. Cavalry Raid was to destroy and cut as
much of the Atlanta & West Point R.R, the
Macon &Western R.R. and the Georgia Railroad.
This raid failed when Stoneman failed to meet
McCook near McDonough as planned and started
on a course to free the U.S. soldiers held at
Andersonville’s prison. Stoneman
was captured near Clinton, Georgia and McCook
had to fight his way out of a big mess on the
McDonough Road when he clashed with Confederate
General Red Jackson's cavalry just west of Lovejoy’s
Station.

Although
most of McCook’s cavalry battle
took place at Lovejoy’s Station
and westward on the Pan Handle Road, his
scouts passed through the Nash Farm area
on McDonough and Babb’s Mill Road
heading toward McDonough seeking Stoneman.
Cavalrymen belonging to McCook damaged
the railroad tracks in Lovejoy but failed
to finish because of McCook's clash with
Red Jackson’s cavalry west of the
depot. McCook headquarters at Lovejoy
was a brief stay at the Stephen Green
Dorsey house, located about a half mile
west of the Nash Farm property located
at Babb’s Mill and McDonough roads.
McCook's
cavalry command was nearly all captured
at a battle located at Browns Mill near
Newnan, Georgia. McCook escaped
and within days reported back to General
Sherman’s headquarters N.W. of Atlanta. |
